Join this four session group workshop designed for beginning enthusiasts to learn the therapeutic art of modern calligraphy in a relaxed, interactive classroom setting. Instructor Liz Roessler will teach the basics of the traditional technique of dipping a steel-nibbed pen into a bottle of liquid acrylic ink, introducing you to her favorite beginner's lettering style-- Romantic-- which is her own creative interpretation of Copperplate...with a modern twist!   The first and second classes will focus on the essential ergonomics of modern calligraphy: the proper way to load and hold the pen, healthy posture, the most effective way to organize your work space, and learning the ritual of dipping. Students will be lead through a complete alphabet, numbers, and symbols.  Liz will share pro recommendations for how to practice at home and specific suggested goals following each class. She will share dozens of cool ideas for using your calligraphy skills to create lettering art going forward, interactive demos and 1-on-1 guidance. In classes three and four, you will be ready to take your new hand-lettering skills to the next level by learning techniques to connect letters in a fluid, well-spaced and aesthetically-balanced way. We will explore techniques to create different flourishing effects and experiment with formats/tips/tools for a variety of popular projects.   Students can bring a couple favorite quotes, short poems, or song lyrics to get Liz's live guidance on creating a take-away piece or two on card stock provided with the class materials. Follow up feedback and  mentoring will also available by email for all students.   Materials included with registration and supplied by the instructor: 2 pen holders /  3 steel nibs / 3 different colors of waterproof acrylic ink; plus a "to go kit"  with an assortment of colorful card stock, creative project ideas, practice guideline sheets of various sizes (print outs as well as emailed PDF's), in addition to an informative follow-up email that is delivered to each student following class-- it includes a recap of where to buy additional calligraphy supplies, PDF versions of several hand-lettered alphabets, articles to read, videos to watch, and more creative inspiration to keep you practicing at home following the course.

White-line woodcutting is a relief printmaking technique. Unlike traditional woodblock technique, in which the artist cuts away around the drawing, white-line woodblock printing artists inscribe v-shaped grooves, leaving the drawing in negative relief. First, a drawing is made, or transferred by various methods, to the surface of the woodblock. Then, the lines of the drawing are cut out with a sharp knife or v-gouge. Next, the artist securely attaches a sheet of absorbent printing paper to the block. One section at a time, the surface of the block is brushed with water-based ink, the paper is lowered on the block, and the back of the paper is rubbed, transferring the ink to the paper. The paper is lifted away from the surface of the block in between inkings, and the process is repeated until the artist is satisfied with the desired color and density of the print.
